KPI Secretary-General Speaks at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026 in Dalian, China
Between 23 and 25 June 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Issara Sereewatthanawut, Secretary-General of the King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI), was invited to participate in the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026 in Dalian, the People’s Republic of China. During the meeting, the secretary-general was invited to speak at two major sessions: the Energy Cooperation session and the APEC–ASEAN Chairs Meeting.
Held under the theme “Innovating at Scale”, the meeting brought together more than 1,700 leaders from the business, government, and academic sectors representing over 90 countries and regions. The opening ceremony featured a special keynote address by H.E. Mr. Li Qiang, Premier of the People’s Republic of China, and was attended by prime ministers from several countries, including Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Guinea, and Montenegro.
During the Energy Cooperation session, the secretary-general noted that the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is not constrained by a lack of knowledge, planning, or evidence. The initiative was first envisioned nearly three decades ago, and the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) has already demonstrated that cross-border electricity transmission—from Lao PDR through Thailand and Malaysia to Singapore—is both practical and achievable. He emphasised that the key challenge now lies in strengthening the political will and collective commitment of ASEAN member states to turn this long-standing vision into reality.
Another key highlight of the visit was the secretary-general’s meeting with Mr. Joo-Ok Lee of the World Economic Forum, following Mr. Lee’s visit to the King Prajadhipok’s Institute in Thailand in April 2026. The meeting focused on advancing future collaboration between the World Economic Forum and KPI, including preparations for the upcoming visit of Mr. Maroun Kairouz, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, scheduled for July. The discussions marked another significant step in strengthening international academic cooperation between the two institutions.
